Kluger, also called the Highlander in many markets, is a crossover SUV from Toyota. The Kluger was first launched in 2001. The car is sold by its name Kluger in Australia and Japan, whereas in America it is called the Highlander. The Highlander has been immensely popular, specially in America due to its ruggedness and off road capabilities. In countries such as Latin America, the car is received very well due to its adaptability to the harsh terrain. The Highlander was marketed as Kluger in Australia and Japan due the existence of the name Highlander in the Hyundai Terracan series. Nevertheless, the SUV with its changed name, was very well received. Although the first generation Kluger and the Highlander were offered with a variety of engines, the Kluger in the Australian markets came with a 3.3L V6 engine giving an output of around 230 bhp. The 2004 model saw a 5 speed automatic transmission attached to the 3.3L V6. The second generation Highlander/Kluger was launched in 2007. The major improvement was the 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox giving an output of 270-hp. The car comes fitted with leather upholstery, GPS, stereo, DVD player, LCD screen and more. The customers are given choices of front wheel as well as all wheel drive. The Kluger name would be discontinued in Australia to be replaced with the original Highlander although the name is retained in Japan. A hybrid version of the Kluger, based on the pioneering Hybrid Synergy Drive Technology, was also launched in 2006.
